L-methylfolate, iron, iodine and a group of vitamins are combined in this supplement to top up nutrients, for example when planning a pregnancy or while pregnant.

• L-methylfolate is a form of folate. Folate helps make red blood cells and lowers the risk of spina bifida and similar problems in the baby.
• Mecobalamin is a form of vitamin B12, needed for red blood cells and healthy nerves.
• Iron helps make red blood cells that carry oxygen.
• Iodine helps the thyroid make its hormones.
• Thiamine, riboflavin, niacinamide and pyridoxine help the body release energy from food and keep nerves and skin healthy.
• Vitamins C and E help protect cells and support skin and the immune system.

Take it as your doctor, midwife or pharmacist tells you, and never take more than the label says.

• Swallow the tablet with water. It does not replace a varied, balanced diet.
• Do not take other vitamin, iron or fish liver oil supplements at the same time unless a health professional says so.
• If you miss a dose, just take the next one as normal. Do not double up.

Possible side effects, mostly from the iron, include:

• constipation
• feeling or being sick
• stomach pain

Large amounts of vitamin C can cause stomach pain, diarrhoea and wind.

Get medical help straight away if:

• a child swallows any tablets, as iron can be fatal to children
• you get numbness, tingling or loss of feeling in your hands or feet

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• have a thyroid problem
• have anaemia or low vitamin B12
• already take iron, folic acid or other vitamin supplements
• take any other medicines

Store as directed on the pack, and keep out of the sight and reach of children because it contains iron.

Vitamin B6: NHS advice is not to take more than 10 mg of vitamin B6 a day from supplements unless a doctor advises it, because long-term high doses can damage nerves. Check the label, as some products in this group contain more.

Pregnancy: folic acid is advised before conception and for the first 12 weeks. Some people need a higher prescribed dose, so speak to your doctor or midwife.

Iodine: high doses over a long time can upset the thyroid.
