Uses
Thiamine (vitamin B1), pyridoxine (vitamin B6) and cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) are combined to restore low levels of these B vitamins, or to stop them getting low.
- Vitamin B1 helps the body release energy from food and keeps nerves healthy.
- Vitamin B6 helps the body use energy from protein and carbohydrates and helps make haemoglobin.
- Vitamin B12 helps make red blood cells and keeps the nervous system healthy.
Low levels can cause tiredness, or tingling and numbness in the hands and feet. The injection form is also used to help manage nerve problems (neuropathies).
How to use
Use it as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. It is best used once a doctor has confirmed which vitamin is low.
- Tablets: swallow with a drink, during or after a meal.
- Injections are given by a healthcare professional, usually into a muscle.
- If you forget a tablet, take it with your next meal the same day. Do not take a double dose.
- See your doctor if you do not feel better, or feel worse, after 30 days. Do not use high-strength tablets for longer than this without medical advice.
Side effects
Possible side effects include:
- feeling or being sick, diarrhoea or stomach pain
- headache
- reddish urine for a short time after a dose (harmless)
- pain, redness or stinging where an injection is given
Get medical help straight away if you have:
- difficulty breathing, dizziness or swelling (signs of a serious allergic reaction)
- sweating, a fast heartbeat, or an itchy, raised rash
- new numbness, tingling or weakness in your arms or legs
Precautions
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you:
- are allergic to any B vitamin
- take levodopa for Parkinson's disease (vitamin B6 can make it work less well)
- take isoniazid, cycloserine, penicillamine, hydralazine or long-term furosemide
- have megaloblastic anaemia or numbness that has not been diagnosed, as B12 may hide a serious underlying problem
High-strength products are not meant for children and teenagers; the age limit depends on the product.
Storage
Tablets: store as directed on the pack. Injections: some brands must be kept in a fridge (2 to 8°C). Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Warnings
Too much vitamin B6: taking high doses of B6 for many months can cause nerve damage, with numbness, tingling or weakness. Do not take more than advised, and have regular check-ups during long-term use. Stop and see a doctor if you get new nerve symptoms.
Alcohol: alcohol reduces how well vitamin B1 is absorbed.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: ask your doctor or pharmacist before use. One injection leaflet advises not to breastfeed while using it.
