Nasomet Aqueous Nasal Spray 50mcg Spray

Mometasone furoate is a corticosteroid (steroid) medicine. As a nasal spray, it calms swelling and irritation inside the nose and reduces mucus, sneezing and itching.

It is used for:

• allergic rhinitis, including hay fever and year-round allergies
• nasal polyps in adults

It controls symptoms but does not cure the allergy. It acts more slowly than antihistamine sprays, but its effect lasts longer.

Use mometasone nasal spray as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. It works best when used regularly at about the same time each day.

• Prime a new bottle (or one not used for a few days) by pumping until a fine mist appears.
• Shake gently, blow your nose, close one nostril and put the nozzle in the other. Keep the bottle upright and tilt your head slightly forward.
• Breathe in gently through your nose as you press, then breathe out through your mouth.
• Wipe the nozzle and replace the cap. Clean the cap and nozzle in cold water now and then; never use a pin to unblock it.
• For the nose only: do not swallow it or spray it into your eyes or mouth.
• Some relief may come in 1–2 days, but the full effect can take 1–2 weeks. See your doctor if you are no better after 14 days.
• If you miss a dose, use it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due. Do not use extra sprays to catch up.

Common side effects include:

• headache
• an unpleasant taste or smell
• sneezing, which usually settles
• nosebleeds, or a dry or sore nose or throat

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• eye pain or blurred vision (possible glaucoma or cataract)
• pain or sores inside the nose, or nosebleeds that will not stop
• signs of a serious allergic reaction: swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or a swollen, blistering or peeling rash (call emergency services)

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you:

• have had an allergic reaction to mometasone or any other medicine
• use other steroids (tablets, inhalers, creams, injections or eye drops)
• have had nose surgery or injury, or have sores in your nose
• have a nose or other infection, including a herpes eye infection
• have had tuberculosis (TB), glaucoma or cataracts, or have cystic fibrosis
• have chickenpox or measles, or have been near someone who has
• take HIV medicines such as ritonavir or cobicistat

Children need a doctor's prescription; long-term, high-dose use can slow growth, so their height may be checked.

Keep the bottle tightly closed in its original container at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture (not in the bathroom), and out of the reach of children.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: it can usually be used, as very little reaches the bloodstream. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breastfeeding.

Long-term use: high doses over a long time can affect the body's natural steroid production; your doctor may give you a steroid card.

Driving: it does not usually affect driving, but do not drive if you get eye pain or blurred vision.

Alcohol: you can drink alcohol while using it.
