Hydryllin 13.5mg/5ml Syrup

Diphenhydramine and ammonium chloride is a cough syrup used to relieve cough.

• Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine. It can ease cough along with sneezing and a runny nose, and it often causes drowsiness.
• Ammonium chloride is an expectorant. It is included to help loosen mucus so it is easier to cough up.

It is meant for short-term relief of a mild illness. If the cough lasts, gets worse or new symptoms appear, stop using it and see a doctor.

Use it exactly as the pack says or as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. Do not take more than the recommended dose.

• It can be taken with or without food.
• Measure each dose with the measuring cup or spoon provided, not a kitchen spoon.
• Leave at least 4 hours between doses. If you forget a dose, just take the next one when needed. Never take a double dose.
• Do not use it with other medicines that contain diphenhydramine, including creams.
• Do not give it to children under 6 years old.

Common side effects include:

• drowsiness, tiredness or poor concentration
• dizziness or clumsiness
• headache
• dry mouth and thicker mucus

Less common effects include blurred vision, trouble passing urine, upset stomach, restlessness or confusion (especially in children and older people).

Stop taking it and get medical help straight away if you have:

• swelling of the face, lips, mouth or throat, or difficulty breathing or swallowing
• a rash or itching, or fainting
• fits (seizures)
• a fast or uneven heartbeat
• unexplained bruising or bleeding, or signs of infection such as fever or sore throat

Do not use it, or check with your doctor or pharmacist first, if you:

• have liver or kidney disease
• are having an asthma attack, or have asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis or a cough with a lot of phlegm
• have glaucoma or trouble passing urine (for example, an enlarged prostate)
• have heart or blood vessel disease, or porphyria
• have diabetes or sugar intolerance, as the syrup may contain sugar
• take or have taken an MAOI antidepressant in the last 2 weeks, or take sleeping tablets, strong painkillers, tranquillisers or other medicines that cause drowsiness
• are 65 or older, as you are more likely to get side effects

Store at or below 25°C in a cool place, with the bottle sealed and kept in its carton, out of the reach of children.

Drowsiness: this medicine can make you sleepy and affect your judgement. Do not drive, use machines or work at heights if affected.

Alcohol: do not drink alcohol while using it.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: do not use it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor advises.

Overdose: too much can cause fits, hallucinations, an abnormal heartbeat or breathing problems. Get medical help straight away.
