Triamcinolone acetonide is a corticosteroid (steroid). It calms the immune system to reduce swelling, redness, heat and pain.

• Injection: given into a muscle, joint or skin lesion by a healthcare professional for inflammation, allergic reactions and some immune conditions.
• Cream, ointment, lotion or spray: eases itching, redness, scaling and inflammation in skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
• Oral paste: applied to mouth sores.

Use it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• Skin products: apply a thin layer and rub in gently. Use only on the area you were told to treat, and keep it out of your eyes. Do not cover a child's nappy area with tight nappies or plastic pants.
• Spray: shake well, avoid breathing it in, and keep away from flames, as it may catch fire.
• Oral paste: press a small amount onto the sore without rubbing, until a thin film forms. See your doctor if the sore has not started healing within 7 days.
• If you miss a dose, apply it when you remember unless the next one is nearly due. Do not double up.
• Injection: always given by a healthcare professional.

Skin and mouth products may cause burning, stinging, itching, dryness, acne, skin colour changes, extra hair growth or small bumps around the mouth.

The injection may cause swelling, sudden weight gain, mood changes, trouble sleeping or headache. It can also weaken bones.

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing
• signs of infection: fever, chills, sore throat, cough, or a red, swollen treated area
• vision problems
• fits (seizures)
• unusual patches on the skin or in the mouth

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you:

• are allergic to triamcinolone or any other medicine
• have an infection, including in the mouth or throat, tuberculosis or hepatitis B
• have diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis or Cushing's syndrome
• have thyroid, liver, heart, kidney or gut disease, or a recent heart attack
• have idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (injection)
• are having surgery or dental treatment

Do not have vaccines without asking your doctor, and avoid people with chickenpox or measles after an injection.

Keep skin and mouth products in their container, tightly closed, at room temperature away from heat and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children. The injection is stored by your healthcare provider.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Children: using steroid creams on children may slow growth and weight gain. Discuss the risks with your child's doctor.

Infections: steroids can lower your resistance to infection. If you are near someone with chickenpox or measles, call your doctor.
