Iron Protein Succinylate supplies iron that your body uses to make red blood cells. In this form, iron is bound to a milk-derived protein.

It is used to treat:

• low iron levels (iron deficiency)
• iron deficiency anaemia, where there are too few, small red blood cells because of a lack of iron

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• It is best taken a few hours before meals. The liquid can be taken straight from the vial or mixed with water.
• Keep at least 2 hours between this medicine and milk, tea, coffee or some plant foods, which can reduce how much iron you absorb. Fresh citrus juice may help absorption.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember, then carry on as before. Do not take a double dose.
• Keep taking it for as long as your doctor advises, until your iron stores are refilled.

Possible side effects include:

• tummy pain or feeling sick
• constipation or diarrhoea
• dark green or black poo, which is harmless and caused by the iron

Stomach side effects often settle if the dose is lowered, so tell your doctor if they bother you.

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• a rash, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing (allergic reaction)
• taken too much, or a child has swallowed it

Do not take it if you:

• are allergic to iron protein succinylate, any other ingredient, or milk proteins
• have a condition that causes iron build-up, such as haemochromatosis or haemosiderosis
• have anaemia not caused by lack of iron

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you take antacids, stomach-acid medicines (such as omeprazole), cholestyramine, chloramphenicol, tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, thyroxine, levodopa, methyldopa, penicillamine, bisphosphonates or mycophenolate, as doses may need spacing apart. Some products contain sorbitol, so check with your doctor if you have fructose intolerance.

Do not store above 30°C. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: the approved leaflet says it is suitable for iron deficiency during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Tests: it may affect tests for hidden blood in poo, so tell the doctor you are taking it.

Driving: it is not known to affect driving or using machines.
