Ironone 150mg Capsules

Iron Polymaltose Complex is a form of iron in which the iron is bound to a sugar (carbohydrate) compound. Your body needs iron to make haemoglobin, the red pigment in red blood cells that carries oxygen.

It is used in adults and teenagers to:

• treat iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia
• prevent iron deficiency in people at high risk

It is often chosen when standard (ferrous) iron tablets cause side effects or are not suitable.

Take it as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• Take it during or straight after a meal. The daily amount can be taken at once or split.
• Take tablets with a glass of water as directed on the pack.
• Syrup and drops can be mixed with fruit or vegetable juice. Any colour change in the drink is harmless.
• If you miss a dose, take the next one at the usual time. Do not take a double dose.
• Do not stop early. Your doctor will decide how long you need it and may check your iron levels with blood tests.

Possible side effects include:

• dark or discoloured poo (very common and harmless)
• diarrhoea or constipation
• feeling sick, indigestion, tummy pain or bloating
• less often: vomiting, stained teeth, headache, rash or itching

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• a rash, hives, wheezing, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips or tongue (allergic reaction)
• black, tarry poo together with feeling unwell, or blood in your poo

If anyone, especially a child, swallows too much, contact a doctor or go to hospital straight away, even if they seem well.

Do not take it if you:

• are allergic to iron polymaltose or any other ingredient
• have anaemia that is not caused by lack of iron
• have too much iron in your body (iron overload) or a problem using iron

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you:

• have or have had an infection or a tumour
• are having iron injections (do not take both together)
• have diabetes or a sugar intolerance, as some liquid forms contain sucrose or sorbitol

Ask your doctor before giving it to a child under 12.

Keep in a cool, dry place below 25°C, not in a bathroom, car or on a window sill. Keep out of the reach and sight of children.

Children: keep all iron medicines away from children, as swallowing too much iron can be dangerous.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you become pregnant while taking it.

Driving: it is not expected to affect your ability to drive or use machines.
