Mecobalamin is a form of vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) that the body can use directly. It helps nerve cells make the proteins and fats they need, which supports nerve repair.

Mecobalamin tablets are used to treat peripheral neuropathy – damage to the nerves in the hands, arms, feet or legs that can cause numbness, tingling, burning or pain.

Take mecobalamin as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. It is usually taken more than once a day.

• Push the tablet out of the blister strip before swallowing. Swallowing a piece of the strip can injure your throat.
• If you miss a dose, take the next one at the usual time. Do not take a double dose.
• If you do not notice any improvement, speak to your doctor. It should not be carried on for months without a benefit.

Side effects are uncommon. They can include:

• loss of appetite
• feeling or being sick
• diarrhoea
• skin rash

Get medical help straight away if…

• you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• have ever had an allergic reaction to mecobalamin or another vitamin B12 medicine
• are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding
• want to give it to a child – it has not been studied in children
• work with mercury or mercury compounds – long-term, high-dose use is best avoided in these workers

Store at room temperature. Once the foil bag is opened, keep the tablets away from light and moisture – light can reduce the strength of the medicine and damp can make the tablets turn reddish.

Nerve pain and numbness have many causes. See your doctor to find the cause, and go back if your symptoms do not improve.
