Silverex 1% Cream

Silver sulfadiazine is a sulfa-type antibacterial cream. It works against a wide range of bacteria and is used to help prevent and treat infection in second- and third-degree burns while the skin heals.

Use it exactly as your doctor or nurse tells you, usually once or twice a day.

• Clean the burn and remove dead skin as you have been shown before applying it.
• Wear a clean, sterile disposable glove to apply a thin layer of cream.
• Keep the burn covered with cream at all times and reapply to any area where it has rubbed off.
• Keep using it until your doctor says the burn has healed enough.
• If you miss an application, apply it when you remember unless the next one is nearly due. Do not use extra to make up.
• For use on the skin only. Keep it away from the eyes, nose and mouth and do not swallow it.

Common side effects include:

• pain, burning or itching where the cream is applied

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• a skin rash
• fever or a sore throat
• unusual bleeding or bruising
• yellowing of the skin or eyes
• blood in your urine
• aching joints, or unusual weakness or tiredness

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you:

• are allergic to silver sulfadiazine or other sulfa medicines
• have liver or kidney disease
• are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding
• use any other creams, lotions or dressings on the area (only use these if your doctor agrees)

Do not use it on babies under 2 months old.

Keep it in its original closed container at room temperature, away from heat and moisture, and out of the reach of children.

Sulfa allergy: do not use it if you have had an allergy to sulfa medicines.

Newborns: not for babies under 2 months old.

Large burns: serious burns need regular medical review. Do not share this cream with anyone else.
