Drotaverine is an antispasmodic. It relaxes smooth muscle, the type of muscle found in the gut, bile ducts, urinary tract and womb, which helps to ease cramping pain.

It may be used for spasms linked to:

• gallstones and inflammation of the gallbladder or bile ducts
• kidney or ureter stones, and kidney or bladder inflammation
• stomach and bowel cramps, including irritable bowel syndrome (as an add-on treatment)
• painful periods (as an add-on treatment)

Take drotaverine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you or as the leaflet says.

• Do not use it for more than 7 days without talking to a doctor.
• See a doctor if you are not better after 7 days or you feel worse.
• If you forget a dose, do not take a double dose to make up for it.

It is not for children under 12.

Side effects are rare and may include:

• headache, dizziness
• feeling sick, constipation
• palpitations (noticeable heartbeat)
• trouble sleeping
• low blood pressure

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling, hives, rash or itching, or trouble breathing
• severe pain, or pain that gets worse

Do not take drotaverine if you are allergic to it, or if you have severe liver, kidney or heart failure. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• have low blood pressure
• take levodopa for Parkinson's disease, as drotaverine can weaken its effect and worsen stiffness and shaking
• cannot tolerate some sugars (tablets may contain lactose)
• are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding

Store below 30°C, out of the sight and reach of children.

Pregnancy: drotaverine passes to the baby and should only be used in pregnancy if your doctor decides it is needed. It must not be used during labour, as it has been linked with heavier bleeding after birth.

Breastfeeding: it is not recommended while breastfeeding, as there is not enough safety information.

Driving: if it makes you dizzy, do not drive or use machines.
