Ginkgo biloba extract is a herbal medicine made from the leaves of the ginkgo tree.

European herbal medicine experts concluded that a standardised ginkgo leaf extract can be used in adults to help with age-related decline in thinking and memory, and quality of life, in mild dementia. Powdered leaf products are traditionally used for heavy legs and cold hands and feet caused by minor circulation problems.

US research reviews found no conclusive evidence that ginkgo helps any health condition, and it did not prevent dementia in large studies. Talk to your doctor about whether it is right for you.

Use it as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, and follow the product leaflet.

• It is for adults only.
• See a doctor before using it for leg or circulation symptoms, to rule out a serious cause.
• See your doctor if memory symptoms do not improve after 3 months or get worse, or if circulation symptoms last more than 2 weeks.
• Never eat raw or roasted ginkgo seeds; they can be poisonous.

Common side effects include:

• headache
• dizziness
• stomach upset
• allergic skin reactions

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• any unusual bleeding, such as nosebleeds, bleeding in the eye, blood in your poo or vomit
• a sudden severe headache, weakness or confusion
• signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling or trouble breathing

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• bleed or bruise easily, or have a bleeding disorder
• take blood thinners such as warfarin, or other medicines that affect bleeding
• are due to have surgery or dental treatment
• take any other regular medicines, as ginkgo may interact with them

Store as directed on the pack or leaflet, and keep out of the reach of children. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.

Bleeding: ginkgo may raise the risk of bleeding, especially with blood-thinning medicines.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: ginkgo may not be safe in pregnancy; near delivery it might cause early labour or extra bleeding. Its safety in breastfeeding is not known. Do not use it unless your doctor advises.
