Stemetil 5mg Tablets

Prochlorperazine is used to treat severe feeling sick (nausea) and being sick (vomiting), including sickness linked to vertigo, Ménière's disease and motion sickness.

It belongs to a group of medicines called phenothiazines. It is also sometimes used for schizophrenia and for short-term treatment of severe anxiety that other medicines have not helped.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, at about the same times each day.

• You can take it with or without food and keep to your normal diet.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless your next dose is nearly due, then skip it. Never take a double dose.
• If you take it for a long-term condition, do not stop suddenly. Stopping quickly can cause sickness, dizziness and shakiness.
• Get up slowly from lying or sitting, as it can make you dizzy.

Common side effects include:

• drowsiness, dizziness or unsteadiness
• dry mouth, blocked nose, headache or constipation
• blurred vision or trouble passing urine
• restlessness, shaking or stiffness
• breast changes or missed periods

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• high fever with stiff muscles, sweating, confusion or a fast heartbeat
• uncontrollable movements of the face, tongue, mouth or jaw, or neck cramps
• fits (seizures), or a fast or irregular heartbeat
• yellow skin or eyes
• sore throat, fever or other signs of infection
• swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a rash
• changes in vision, or an erection that lasts for hours

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• are allergic to prochlorperazine or similar medicines (phenothiazines)
• have glaucoma, epilepsy, heart disease or a blood disorder
• have Parkinson's disease or balance problems
• have breast cancer or a tumour of the adrenal gland (phaeochromocytoma)
• have had bad reactions to mental health medicines
• are older and have dementia

It is not for very young children or those weighing under about 9 kg.

Keep in the original tightly closed container at room temperature, away from heat and moisture (not in the bathroom), and out of the reach of children.

Dementia: older people with dementia who take medicines like this have a higher risk of death. It should not be used for behaviour problems in dementia.

Driving: it can make you drowsy and slow your reactions. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.

Alcohol: alcohol can make side effects worse; ask your doctor.

Heat: it can make it harder for your body to cool down, so take care in hot weather and during hard exercise.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Use late in pregnancy may affect the newborn.
