Uses
Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It eases pain and inflammation and lowers fever.
It is used for short courses to treat:
- acute (short-term) pain
- painful periods (primary dysmenorrhoea)
European regulators advise that it should only be used as a second choice, after weighing your personal risks, and that it should no longer be used for long-term conditions such as osteoarthritis.
How to use
Take nimesulide exactly as your doctor tells you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
- Take it after a meal.
- Use it for the shortest time possible. One course must never last more than 15 days.
- Stop taking it if it is not helping and talk to your doctor.
- Do not take it together with other painkillers, including paracetamol or other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, diclofenac or aspirin.
- If you miss a dose, ask your pharmacist what to do. Do not take two doses together.
Side effects
Like other NSAIDs, nimesulide can cause stomach problems, and rarely it can seriously harm the liver, sometimes after only a short time.
Stop taking it and contact your doctor straight away if you have:
- loss of appetite, feeling or being sick, stomach pain, ongoing tiredness or dark pee (possible liver damage)
- fever or flu-like symptoms such as aches, chills or shivering
- black or bloody poo, vomiting blood, or severe stomach pain (possible bleeding or ulcer)
- wheezing, hives, a swollen face or difficulty breathing (allergic reaction)
If you have had a liver reaction to nimesulide, you must never take it again.
Precautions
Do not take nimesulide if you:
- are allergic to nimesulide, or have reacted to aspirin or another NSAID (wheezing, runny nose, hives)
- have liver disease, raised liver enzymes or have had a liver reaction to nimesulide
- take other medicines that can affect the liver, drink alcohol heavily or are dependent on drugs
- have or have had a stomach or duodenal ulcer, bleeding from the gut, a bleed in the brain or a bleeding disorder
- have severe heart failure or severe kidney problems
- have a fever or flu
- are in the last 3 months of pregnancy or are breastfeeding
Tell your doctor if you have ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, heart or kidney disease, or a sugar intolerance, or take blood thinners, water tablets (diuretics), lithium, methotrexate or ciclosporin.
Storage
Store as the pack directs and keep out of the sight and reach of children.
