Uses
Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It relieves pain, reduces swelling (inflammation) and brings down a high temperature.
It is used for:
- headaches and migraine
- joint and muscle pain, and pain after an injury
- toothache and period pain
- fever
It can cause more side effects than paracetamol, so paracetamol may be worth trying first if it suits you.
How to use
Use it as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, or as the pack says.
- Swallow tablets or capsules whole with water, ideally with or after food.
- Use the lowest dose for the shortest time you need it.
- Leave enough time between doses, as shown on the pack.
- Do not take it by mouth for more than 10 days unless a doctor advises it. See a doctor if pain gets worse or does not go away.
- For gel or spray, rub gently into the painful area, avoid eyes, mouth and broken skin, and wash your hands after.
Side effects
Common side effects include:
- indigestion or tummy ache
- feeling or being sick
- headache or dizziness
- rash
- diarrhoea or constipation
Get medical help straight away if you have:
- signs of stomach bleeding, such as vomiting blood, black tar-like poo, or tummy pain with pale skin or breathlessness
- swelling of the face, tongue or throat, an itchy raised rash or trouble breathing
- blood in your urine, or swollen ankles, feet or hands
Precautions
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:
- have reacted to ibuprofen, aspirin or another NSAID
- have or have had a stomach ulcer
- have asthma or allergies such as hay fever
- have chickenpox
- have heart, liver or kidney problems, a bleeding disorder or have had a stroke
- take blood thinners such as warfarin, steroids, antidepressants or blood pressure medicines
Do not take it with other NSAIDs such as naproxen or aspirin. You can take it with paracetamol if needed.
Storage
Store as directed on the pack or leaflet, and keep out of the reach of children. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.
Warnings
Pregnancy: avoid it unless a doctor or pharmacist advises it. Paracetamol is usually preferred.
Breastfeeding: check with a pharmacist or doctor first. It can often be used if needed.
Alcohol: avoid heavy drinking, as it raises the risk of side effects.
Driving: wait until any dizziness passes before driving or using machines.
