Uses
Betahistine dihydrochloride is used for Ménière's disease, a condition of the inner ear. It is thought to improve blood flow in the inner ear, which lowers the pressure that builds up there.
It can make these symptoms less frequent and less severe:
- vertigo (a spinning dizziness)
- tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears)
- hearing loss
- nausea
How to use
Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.
- Swallow the tablets with water, ideally with or after food.
- Spread your doses evenly through the day.
- It may take a while for your symptoms to improve, so keep taking it.
- If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due. Never take two doses together.
- Talk to your doctor before you stop.
Side effects
Common side effects include:
- feeling sick
- indigestion
- headache
Get medical help straight away if you have:
- swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, or a raised itchy rash (emergency)
- any other side effect that seems serious
Precautions
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:
- have reacted badly to betahistine before
- have a stomach ulcer now or have had one
- have asthma
- have low blood pressure
- take antihistamines or MAOI antidepressants
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
Storage
Store as the pack directs and keep out of the sight and reach of children. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.
Warnings
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: it is not usually used, because there is little information on safety. Speak to your doctor.
Driving: betahistine itself is unlikely to affect driving, but Ménière's disease can cause sudden vertigo, so be careful.
