Ceremin Syrup 1g Injection

Piracetam belongs to a group of medicines called nootropics. It is not a sedative or a stimulant.

It may be used for:

• cortical myoclonus – sudden jerking of the muscles – alone or with other medicines
• memory, attention and thinking problems caused by brain disease
• after-effects of a stroke, especially speech problems
• dizziness and related balance problems

The injection is used in sudden (acute) illness or when medicines cannot be taken or absorbed by mouth.

A doctor or nurse gives piracetam as a slow injection or a drip into a vein, usually in 2 or 3 doses a day.

• Your dose depends on your condition and how well your kidneys work.
• If it is used for myoclonus, it must not be stopped suddenly – the jerking can come back or fits can happen.
• Older people should have their dose reviewed regularly.

Common side effects include:

• being overactive or restless
• nervousness
• weight gain

Less often: sleepiness, low mood, weakness, headache, poor sleep, dizziness, stomach pain, diarrhoea, feeling or being sick, and pain or vein swelling at the injection site.

Get medical help straight away if…

• you have a severe allergic reaction, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat that makes breathing or swallowing hard
• you have more fits than usual

You should not have piracetam if you are allergic to it, have had bleeding in the brain, have severe kidney disease, or have Huntington's disease.

Tell your doctor if you:

• have kidney problems
• have a bleeding or clotting problem, or severe bleeding
• take thyroid hormones – confusion, irritability and poor sleep have been reported

Store at or below 25°C in the original pack to protect from light. Do not freeze. Do not use if the solution is cloudy.

Piracetam should be avoided in pregnancy unless clearly needed. It passes into breast milk, so breastfeeding should stop if treatment is needed. Side effects such as sleepiness or dizziness may affect driving.
