Betahistine treats the symptoms of Ménière's disease, an inner ear condition. It is thought to improve blood flow in the inner ear and reduce the build-up of pressure there.

It can ease and reduce how often you get:

• dizziness and a spinning feeling (vertigo)
• ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
• hearing loss
• feeling sick

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• Swallow tablets with a glass of water, ideally with or after a meal.
• Space your doses evenly through the day.
• It may take some time before your symptoms improve.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless your next dose is nearly due. Never take two doses together.
• Do not stop taking it without talking to your doctor.

Common side effects include:

• feeling sick
• indigestion
• headache

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• swelling of the throat or tongue, a raised itchy rash, or trouble breathing (call emergency services)
• any other side effect that seems serious

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• have had a reaction to betahistine before
• have low blood pressure
• have or have had a stomach ulcer
• have asthma
• are pregnant or breastfeeding
• take antihistamines or MAOI antidepressants

Store as directed on the pack or leaflet, and keep out of the reach of children. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.

Pregnancy: it is not usually used in pregnancy, as there is little information on its effects on the baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or trying for a baby.

Breastfeeding: it is not usually recommended. Your doctor may suggest another option.

Driving: it does not usually affect driving, but Ménière's disease itself can cause sudden dizziness, so take care.
