Maxolon 10mg Tablets

Metoclopramide is an anti-sickness medicine. It is used to treat or prevent feeling sick (nausea) and being sick (vomiting).

It may be prescribed to prevent sickness after chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and to treat sickness during a migraine attack. It is available on prescription only.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. Leave at least 6 hours between doses, even if you are sick after a dose.

• You can eat and drink normally while taking it.
• For the liquid, use the measuring spoon or syringe supplied.
• It is usually prescribed for a short time only, because side effects are more likely if it is taken for longer than 5 days.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless your next dose is nearly due; then skip it. Never take 2 doses together.

Common side effects include:

• feeling sleepy
• low mood
• diarrhoea
• feeling weak or lacking energy

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• movements you cannot control, such as twitching, shaking, stiff muscles or muscle spasms (this is the most common serious side effect)
• a high temperature with heavy sweating, stiff muscles and confusion
• seeing or hearing things that are not there
• a slow heartbeat, dizziness, chest pain or shortness of breath
• signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the lips, tongue or throat or trouble breathing

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• have had a bad reaction to metoclopramide before
• have epilepsy or Parkinson's disease
• have a blockage, tear or bleeding in your stomach or bowel, or recent surgery there
• take medicines for Parkinson's disease, psychosis, some antidepressants (SSRIs), or medicines that make you drowsy such as strong painkillers or anxiety medicines
• are pregnant or breastfeeding (it is not usually used while breastfeeding)

Store as directed on the packet or leaflet, and keep out of the reach of children. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.

Driving: it can make you drowsy. Do not drive, cycle or use machinery until you feel fully alert.

Alcohol: it is best not to drink alcohol, as it increases the risk of side effects.

Short courses: do not take it for longer than prescribed, because the risk of uncontrollable movements rises with longer use.
