Ketoprofen gel contains a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Used on the skin, it reduces inflammation and relieves pain in the area underneath.

It is used for pain, swelling, heat, redness and stiffness in joints and muscles caused by:

• sprains, strains and sports injuries
• injuries to muscles, tendons and ligaments
• soft tissue injury, including rheumatic pain
• joint pain and backache

Use it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. It is for use on the skin only.

• Wash your hands before and after use, unless you are treating your hands.
• Rub it gently onto the painful area only. Do not cover it with a dressing or bandage.
• Keep it away from the eyes, mouth, nostrils, genitals, back passage and broken skin.
• Only use it for as long as directed (usually no more than about a week). Longer use raises the risk of skin reactions.
• If you forget an application, use it when you remember unless the next one is nearly due. Do not apply extra to make up.
• Not recommended for children under 15 unless a doctor advises.
• If the gel is swallowed, contact a doctor or hospital straight away.

Uncommon side effects, which usually go away when you stop, include itching, redness or an eczema-like rash where it is applied. Rarely, the skin can react badly to sunlight.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you have:

• swelling of the face, lips, eyelids, throat or tongue, difficulty breathing or dizziness
• redness, swelling, itching, blisters or burning on the treated skin, especially after sun exposure
• wheezing, breathlessness, fever or widespread rash
• stomach pain, black stools or bleeding

Do not use it if you:

• are allergic to ketoprofen, aspirin, ibuprofen or other NSAIDs, or fenofibrate
• have ever had a skin reaction to sunlight, or a skin allergy to ketoprofen, sunscreens or perfume
• have eczema, acne, infected skin, wounds or broken skin in the area
• are in the last 3 months of pregnancy, or are breastfeeding

Check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you:

• have heart, liver or kidney problems
• have asthma with long-term runny nose, sinusitis or nasal polyps
• take methotrexate
• are in the first 6 months of pregnancy

Older people are more likely to get side effects.

Do not store above 25°C. Keep the tube in its carton, away from naked flames, and out of the reach of children. Check the pack for how long it can be used once opened.

Sunlight: protect treated skin from the sun, even on cloudy days, and do not use sunbeds. Keep the area covered with clothing during treatment and for 2 weeks after stopping, as serious skin reactions can occur.

Cosmetics: stop using it if you get a rash, including after using products containing octocrylene (found in some sunscreens, shampoos and creams).

Pregnancy: do not use in the last 3 months of pregnancy.
