ZATOFEN Syrup 0.2mg Syrup

Ketotifen is an antihistamine that blocks the body's allergic response. Taken by mouth, it is used together with other asthma medicines to help control mild asthma caused by allergies, especially in children.

It works as a preventer, so it has to be taken regularly. It will not stop an asthma attack once it has begun.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• Swallow tablets whole. For syrup, use the measuring device provided.
• Keep using your other asthma medicines unless your doctor says otherwise.
• It may take 2 to 3 months to see the full benefit. Contact your doctor if your asthma gets worse.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due. Do not double up.
• Do not stop or change the dose without talking to your doctor.

Common side effects include:

• drowsiness or dizziness
• dry mouth
• increased appetite and weight gain
• trouble sleeping, irritability, nervousness or excitement (especially in children)
• cold or flu-like symptoms

Stop taking it and get medical help straight away if you have:

• a fit (seizure)
• a severe rash with blistering, peeling skin, sore lips or fever
• yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or pale poo
• easy bruising or bleeding

Do not take it if you are allergic to ketotifen or any ingredient.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you:

• have ever had fits (seizures)
• have diabetes, as it may interact with diabetes medicines
• take other antihistamines, sleeping tablets or sedatives
• have a sugar intolerance such as lactose intolerance (some tablets contain lactose)

Store tablets below 25°C in a dry place, out of the reach and sight of children.

Asthma attacks: ketotifen does not treat sudden asthma attacks. Keep your reliever inhaler with you.

Driving: it can cause drowsiness, especially at the start. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.

Alcohol: alcohol can increase drowsiness.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: talk to your doctor first; it is not known if it passes into breast milk.
