Uses
Levosulpiride helps the stomach and gut move food along (a prokinetic effect) and reduces nausea and vomiting. It belongs to the benzamide group of medicines. In adults it is used for short-term treatment of:
- slow, difficult digestion (dyspepsia), with symptoms such as fullness, bloating, burping, heartburn or poor appetite, when other treatments have not helped. This includes slow stomach emptying linked to diabetes
- nausea and vomiting caused by cancer medicines, when first-choice treatments have not worked
- dizziness (vertigo), ringing in the ears and nausea linked to Ménière's disease
How to use
Take levosulpiride exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.
- It is usually taken before meals.
- For drops, measure them into a glass with a little water.
- If you forget a dose, do not take a double dose to make up for it.
- It is meant for short-term use. Ask your doctor before using it for a long time.
- It should not be given to children or teenagers.
Side effects
With longer use, it can raise the hormone prolactin. This may cause:
- missed periods
- milky discharge from the breasts
- breast swelling in men
- changes in sex drive
Drowsiness, shaking and other movement problems are also possible.
Stop taking it and get medical help straight away if you have:
- high fever, stiff muscles, sweating, a fast or uneven heartbeat, or confusion
- a fast or irregular heartbeat, or fainting
- uncontrolled movements, stiffness or slowness
- a painful, swollen, red leg, chest pain or breathlessness (signs of a blood clot)
Precautions
Do not take it if you:
- have epilepsy, mania, breast cancer, or an adrenal tumour (phaeochromocytoma)
- are pregnant, might be pregnant or are breastfeeding
Check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you:
- have bleeding, a blockage or a tear in the stomach or gut
- have heart disease, or you or your family have had a heart rhythm problem (long QT)
- have risk factors for stroke, or a history of blood clots
- take other antipsychotic medicines, medicines that affect heart rhythm or body salts, opioid painkillers or anticholinergic medicines
- are older or have dementia (it is not for treating dementia)
Storage
No special storage conditions are needed. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children and do not use after the expiry date.
Warnings
Alcohol: do not drink alcohol during treatment.
Driving: it may cause drowsiness or unusual movements. If this happens, do not drive or use machines.
Pregnancy: babies whose mothers took it late in pregnancy may have shaking, stiffness, sleepiness or feeding and breathing problems.
