Profylline Syrup 100mg Syrup

Doxofylline belongs to a group of medicines called xanthines, like theophylline. It is used to treat:

• bronchial asthma
• lung conditions in which the airways (bronchi) become narrowed or tightened

Take it exactly as your doctor tells you. The dose depends on your age and the form you have (tablets, sachets or syrup).

• Tablets and syrup are usually taken two or three times a day. Sachets for children are dissolved in plenty of water.
• Keep your intake of caffeine-containing drinks and foods (such as tea, coffee, cola and chocolate) moderate while taking it.
• Do not take more than prescribed. If you are not sure what to do about a missed dose, ask your pharmacist.

Possible side effects include:

• feeling sick, being sick or stomach pain
• headache, irritability or trouble sleeping
• fast heartbeat, skipped beats or fast breathing
• raised blood sugar
• protein in the urine

Get medical help straight away if:

• you have a very fast or irregular heartbeat, or a seizure (fit)
• you have taken too much, as overdose can cause serious heart rhythm problems and seizures
• you have signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, swelling or difficulty breathing

Do not take it if you:

• are allergic to doxofylline or similar medicines (xanthines such as theophylline)
• are having, or have recently had, a heart attack
• have low blood pressure
• are breastfeeding

Tell your doctor before taking it if you:

• have heart problems, high blood pressure, or long-term lung disease
• have an overactive thyroid, liver or kidney problems, a stomach ulcer or an infection
• are older, smoke, or have very low oxygen levels
• take other xanthines, ephedrine, erythromycin, lincomycin, clindamycin, warfarin-type blood thinners, allopurinol, cimetidine, propranolol, phenytoin or other epilepsy medicines, or have had a flu vaccine
• are pregnant or planning a pregnancy (it is only used if clearly needed)

Store at room temperature, out of the sight and reach of children.

Do not combine: do not take it with other xanthine medicines such as theophylline or aminophylline unless your doctor says so.

Breastfeeding: do not take it while breastfeeding.

Ingredients: some syrups contain alcohol and sugar, and some sachets contain aspartame (not suitable for people with phenylketonuria). Check the pack.
