Ospamox 1000mg Tablets

Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that treats infections caused by bacteria. It is used for problems such as chest infections (including pneumonia), ear infections, dental abscesses, skin infections and urinary tract infections.

Together with other medicines, it is also used to clear H. pylori, a germ that can cause stomach ulcers.

Amoxicillin does not work against viruses, so it will not help colds or flu.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, with doses spread evenly through the day.

• You can take it with or without food. Taking it after a meal or snack may help if it upsets your stomach.
• Chew chewable tablets fully before swallowing.
• Shake the liquid well and measure it with the syringe or spoon provided, not a kitchen spoon.
• Finish the whole course, even if you feel better. Stopping early can let the infection come back and helps germs become resistant.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember, unless your next dose is nearly due. Never take two doses together.

Common side effects include:

• feeling sick or being sick
• diarrhoea (drink plenty of fluids)
• a mild skin rash

Stop taking it and get medical help straight away if you have:

• swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue or throat, wheezing or trouble breathing (call emergency services)
• a widespread rash that is raised, blistering or peeling
• watery or bloody diarrhoea, sometimes with tummy cramps or fever. This can start up to 2 months after the course ends
• yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or pale stools
• repeated vomiting 1 to 4 hours after a dose, with extreme tiredness or paleness

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• have ever had a reaction to amoxicillin, penicillin or any other antibiotic
• have kidney or liver problems
• have glandular fever (mononucleosis), as a rash is more likely
• have asthma, hay fever, hives or other allergies
• are pregnant, trying for a baby or breastfeeding
• take other medicines, herbal remedies or supplements

Keep tablets and capsules at room temperature away from heat and moisture. Liquid is best kept in the fridge (do not freeze) and thrown away after 14 days, or as the label says. Keep out of the reach of children.

Allergy: around 1 in 10 people react to amoxicillin. A delayed rash can appear a week or more after starting. Never take it if you have had a serious penicillin allergy.

Contraception: severe or long-lasting diarrhoea may stop the contraceptive pill from working. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about extra protection.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding so they can check it is right for you.
