Nitroglycerin (glyceryl trinitrate) slow-release tablets and capsules are used to prevent angina, chest pain caused by narrowed heart arteries. Nitroglycerin is a nitrate that relaxes and widens blood vessels so the heart needs less effort.

This slow-release form works too slowly to relieve an angina attack once it starts. Ask your doctor what to use for a sudden attack.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, at the times they set.

• Your doctor will plan a daily time without the medicine (a nitrate-free period). This stops it losing its effect.
• Do not change your dosing times yourself, for example to avoid headaches.
• Do not stop taking it suddenly, as chest pain may return or get worse. Speak to your doctor first.
• Get up slowly from sitting or lying to avoid dizziness.

Common side effects include:

• headache, which can be strong and may come with each dose
• light-headedness, especially when standing up

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• chest pain that is worse, more frequent or does not go away
• fainting or very low blood pressure
• a slow heartbeat, being sick, or blue-grey lips or skin
• a rash or other signs of an allergic reaction

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• are allergic to nitroglycerin or other nitrates
• have low blood pressure, are dehydrated or have recently had a heart attack
• have heart failure or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
• take other blood pressure medicines or calcium-channel blockers
• are pregnant or breastfeeding

Store at room temperature (about 25°C, not above 30°C) in a tightly closed container, protected from moisture, and out of reach of children.

Erection medicines: never take it with sildenafil, tadalafil or vardenafil, or with riociguat. Together they can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.

Alcohol: alcohol can make dizziness and low blood pressure worse.

Driving: do not drive or use machines if you feel dizzy or light-headed.
