Uses
Levofloxacin eye drops contain a fluoroquinolone (quinolone) antibiotic that kills some types of bacteria.
They are used to treat bacterial infections of the front surface of the eye, such as bacterial conjunctivitis (an infection of the thin covering over the white of the eye). They can be used in adults and children aged 1 year and over.
Talk to a doctor if your eye is not better, or is worse, after 5 days.
How to use
Use the drops exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. Drops are used more often in the first 2 days, then less often. A course usually lasts about 5 days.
- Wash your hands. Do not let the dropper tip touch your eye, skin or fingers.
- Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid, look up and let one drop fall inside the lid.
- Close your eye and press the inner corner for about a minute, then wipe away any extra liquid.
- If you use other eye drops, wait at least 15 minutes between them.
- Do not wear contact lenses while your eye is infected.
- If you forget a dose, use it as soon as you remember. Do not use a double dose.
- Finish the course. Stopping early may slow healing.
Side effects
Side effects usually affect only the eye and do not last long. Common ones are:
- a burning feeling in the eye
- blurred vision or mucus in the eye
Less common effects include stinging, eye pain, dry or itchy eyes, red eyes or eyelids, sticky eyelids, light sensitivity, headache and a runny or blocked nose.
Stop using the drops and get medical help straight away if you have:
- swelling or tightness in the throat, or difficulty breathing
- worsening redness and itching of the eyes, or sudden swelling of the eyelids
- pain or swelling of a tendon
- any severe or lasting side effect
Precautions
Do not use the drops if you are allergic to levofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics (such as ciprofloxacin).
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using them if you:
- use any other eye drops or eye ointments
- wear soft contact lenses (the preservative can discolour them)
- have dry eyes or problems with the cornea
- are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are breastfeeding
They are not recommended for babies under 1 year.
Storage
No special storage conditions are needed. Keep the bottle tightly closed and throw it away 28 days after first opening, to prevent infection. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Warnings
Tendons: tendon swelling and tears have happened with quinolone antibiotics taken by mouth or injection, mainly in older people and those taking steroids. Stop the drops if a tendon becomes painful or swollen.
Driving: if your sight is blurred after using the drops, wait until it clears before driving or using machines.
Too many drops: rinse the eye with water and tell your doctor or pharmacist.
