Kibon 1mcg Injection

Calcitriol is the active form of vitamin D3. It helps the body control calcium levels in the blood.

Calcitriol injection is used to manage low calcium levels (hypocalcaemia) in people having long-term kidney dialysis. It can also help lower raised parathyroid hormone levels in these patients.

Calcitriol injection is given by a nurse or doctor, usually into the dialysis line at the end of a dialysis session.

• Your doctor decides the dose and adjusts it based on regular blood tests for calcium and phosphate.
• Follow the advice you are given about calcium in your diet or calcium supplements. Too much or too little calcium can affect how well treatment works.
• Follow any diet or fluid advice from your kidney team.
• Do not take other vitamin D products unless your doctor agrees.

The most common side effect is a high calcium level. Early signs can include:

• weakness, headache or feeling sleepy
• feeling sick, being sick, constipation or loss of appetite
• dry mouth, being very thirsty, or a metallic taste
• muscle or bone pain

Tell your doctor or nurse straight away if you have:

• an irregular heartbeat, confusion or severe tiredness
• signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, trouble breathing or feeling faint
• signs of dehydration, such as dizziness, weakness, strong thirst and passing less urine

You should not have it if you have high calcium levels, vitamin D toxicity or an allergy to calcitriol or vitamin D products.

Tell your doctor before treatment if you:

• take digoxin (digitalis), as high calcium can affect it
• take other vitamin D products, calcium supplements or magnesium-containing antacids or laxatives
• take seizure medicines, steroids or thiazide water tablets
• are pregnant or breastfeeding

Hospital staff store it between 15°C and 30°C, protected from light, excessive heat and freezing.

Blood tests: calcium and phosphate are checked often, especially when the dose is being adjusted.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: only used in pregnancy if the benefit outweighs the risk. Your doctor will advise whether to stop breastfeeding or the medicine.

Children: safety of the injection in people under 18 has not been established.
