Uses
Budesonide and formoterol fumarate dihydrate are combined in one inhaler for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
- Budesonide is a corticosteroid that reduces swelling and irritation in the airways, helping to prevent symptoms.
- Formoterol is a long-acting bronchodilator that relaxes the muscles around the airways.
Depending on your plan, your doctor may ask you to use it daily as a preventer, as both preventer and reliever, or (for mild asthma in some people) only when needed.
How to use
Use it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, and ask them to show you how to use your inhaler device.
- Capsules for inhalation must never be swallowed. Put them only in the inhaler device that comes with them, then breathe the powder in.
- If it is a daily preventer, use it every day even when you feel well.
- Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after your doses to help prevent mouth thrush.
- If you miss a daily dose, take it when you remember unless the next is nearly due. Do not double up.
- Do not stop or change your dose without talking to your doctor.
Side effects
Common side effects include:
- shaking, a pounding heartbeat or headache
- mouth thrush, sore throat, cough or hoarse voice
- chest infection (pneumonia) in people with COPD
Get medical help straight away if you have:
- sudden wheezing or breathlessness just after inhaling: use your reliever and contact a doctor urgently
- swelling of the face, mouth or throat, hives, or trouble breathing or swallowing
- fever, chills, or more or discoloured phlegm
- blurred vision or other changes in eyesight
Precautions
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you:
- are allergic to budesonide, formoterol or lactose (many powder inhalers contain lactose with traces of milk protein)
- have heart problems, high blood pressure or an irregular heartbeat
- have diabetes, thyroid or adrenal problems, low potassium or severe liver disease
- have a lung infection or take steroid tablets
- take beta-blockers (including eye drops), water tablets, theophylline, some antifungals, antibiotics or HIV medicines
Storage
Keep it out of the sight and reach of children and follow the storage advice on your pack. Keep inhalation capsules in their blister until you need them.
Warnings
Worsening symptoms: see your doctor if you need your reliever more often or wake at night with symptoms.
Steroid effects: long-term high doses can rarely affect the adrenal glands, bones, eyes or a child's growth.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: talk to your doctor. If you become pregnant, do not stop on your own; tell your doctor.
Driving: little or no effect expected.
