Uses
Ebastine is an antihistamine that blocks histamine, a substance the body releases during an allergic reaction.
It is used to treat:
- seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever), such as sneezing and a runny, itchy or blocked nose caused by pollen
- year-round (perennial) allergic rhinitis
- hives (urticaria)
How to use
Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, usually once a day.
- You can take it with or without food.
- Swallow the tablet by mouth.
- If you forget a dose, do not take a double dose to make up for it.
- If you have severe liver problems, your doctor may limit your dose.
- If you take too much, contact a doctor or pharmacist straight away.
Side effects
Common side effects include:
- headache
- sleepiness
- dry mouth
Rarely, people have dizziness, nervousness, trouble sleeping, taste changes, stomach upset, rash, period changes, swelling or tiredness.
Get medical help straight away if you have:
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing (a serious allergic reaction)
- a fast or pounding heartbeat (palpitations)
- yellow skin or eyes, or other signs of liver problems
Precautions
Do not take these tablets if you are allergic to ebastine, and do not give them to children under 12. Check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you:
- have, or have had, heart disease, fainting linked to the heart, or palpitations
- have liver disease
- have an intolerance to some sugars (the tablets contain lactose)
- take ketoconazole, itraconazole, erythromycin or clarithromycin (generally not recommended together)
- take rifampicin, which can make ebastine work less well
Storage
Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Warnings
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: ebastine is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding because there is not enough safety information. Ask your doctor for advice.
Driving: at usual doses it is not expected to affect driving, but it can cause sleepiness or dizziness in some people. See how it affects you before driving or using machines.
