Calcipotriol and betamethasone are combined in a gel or ointment to treat plaque psoriasis in adults, on the body and the scalp. Psoriasis happens when skin cells are made too fast, causing red, thick and scaly patches.

• Calcipotriol is a form of vitamin D. It helps bring skin cell growth back to normal.
• Betamethasone is a strong (potent) steroid. It reduces redness and inflammation.

Using both together treats two parts of psoriasis at once.

Use it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, usually once a day.

• Shake the gel bottle before use. Rub a thin layer gently into the psoriasis patches only.
• For the scalp, comb out loose scales first and tilt your head so it does not run onto your face.
• Wash your hands well afterwards so it does not spread to your face, mouth or eyes.
• Do not cover the area with bandages, tight wraps or a shower cap.
• Avoid bathing or washing your hair straight after applying it.
• Do not use more than the daily limit your doctor or the leaflet gives, or on more than about a third of your body.
• If you miss a dose, do not use a double amount. If you have used it for a long time, ask your doctor before stopping.

Common or less serious side effects include:

• itching, burning or irritation of the skin
• dry skin, rash or redness
• inflamed hair roots (folliculitis)
• with long use: thinner skin, stretch marks or visible small veins

Tell a doctor straight away if you have:

• worse psoriasis, or red patches with yellowish pus spots
• signs of high calcium, such as passing lots of urine, constipation, muscle weakness or confusion
• tiredness, low mood or anxiety (possible adrenal problems)
• cloudy or blurred vision, or eye pain
• swelling of the face, mouth or throat, or trouble breathing (get emergency help)

Do not use it, and talk to your doctor, if you:

• have problems with calcium levels in your body
• have erythrodermic, exfoliative or pustular psoriasis
• have skin infections, acne, rosacea, a rash around the mouth, thin skin or broken skin in the area

Check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you:

• use other steroid or calcipotriol medicines
• have diabetes or guttate psoriasis
• want to use it on the face, genitals or skin folds (these should be avoided)

Do not refrigerate. Keep the bottle in its carton to protect it from light, and out of the reach of children. Throw the gel away 6 months after first opening.

Not for under-18s.

Fire risk: fabric with this product on it catches fire more easily. Do not smoke or go near naked flames.

Sunlight: avoid too much sunbathing, sunbeds and other light treatments.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: ask your doctor first. If breastfeeding is agreed, do not apply it to the breast area.
