Trimetazidine dihydrochloride is used, together with other medicines, to treat angina pectoris (chest pain caused by narrowed heart arteries) in adults. It helps protect heart cells when their oxygen supply is reduced during an angina episode.

It is an add-on treatment, usually for people whose angina is not well controlled by, or who cannot take, other angina medicines. It does not stop an angina attack that is already happening, and it is not a treatment for unstable angina or a heart attack.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• Take the tablets with meals.
• Swallow modified-release tablets whole. Do not chew them.
• If you forget a dose, do not take a double dose to make up for it.
• Talk to your doctor before you stop taking it.
• If you have an angina attack while taking it, tell your doctor so your treatment can be reviewed.

Your doctor may adjust the treatment if you have kidney problems or are over 75.

Common side effects include:

• dizziness, headache or weakness
• stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhoea, feeling or being sick
• rash, itching or hives

Less often it can cause palpitations, flushing, or dizziness and fainting on standing up, which may lead to falls.

Stop taking it and see a doctor straight away if you have:

• trembling, stiffness, slow movements or a shuffling walk
• swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or a widespread blistering rash
• yellow skin or eyes, dark pee or pale poo
• frequent infections, or unusual bleeding or bruising

Do not take it if you:

• are allergic to trimetazidine or any ingredient
• have Parkinson's disease or related movement problems such as tremors or restless legs
• have severe kidney problems

Check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you:

• have moderate kidney problems or are older than 75
• have closed-angle glaucoma
• take any other medicines, including ones bought without a prescription

It is not recommended for anyone under 18.

No special storage conditions are needed. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Movement problems: it can cause or worsen Parkinson-like symptoms, especially in older people. These usually go away after stopping, so report them to your doctor.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: it is best avoided in pregnancy and should not be used while breastfeeding.

Driving: it may make you dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive or use machines if affected.

Sport: it may give a positive result in doping tests.
