Febuxostat reduces the amount of uric acid your body makes. Too much uric acid can form crystals in the joints and cause gout.

It is used long term to help prevent gout attacks in adults, usually when allopurinol has not worked well enough or is not suitable. It does not treat a gout attack that has already started, and it controls gout rather than curing it.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, usually once a day at about the same time.

• You can take it with or without food.
• Gout attacks can become more frequent in the first few months. Your doctor may give you another medicine, such as colchicine or an anti-inflammatory painkiller, to help with this.
• Keep taking febuxostat even during an attack, and do not stop without talking to your doctor.
• It may take several months to see the full benefit, and you may need blood tests.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless your next dose is nearly due; then skip it. Never take two doses together.

Common side effects include:

• feeling sick
• joint pain

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• chest pain, shortness of breath, a fast or irregular heartbeat, or fainting
• numbness or weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, sudden blurred vision or a sudden severe headache
• a rash, blistering or peeling skin, especially with fever or flu-like symptoms
• swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
• yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or pain in the upper right side of the tummy

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• have or have had heart disease, a heart attack or a stroke
• are allergic to febuxostat or allopurinol
• have kidney or liver disease
• have had an organ transplant, cancer or Lesch-Nyhan syndrome
• are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding
• take any other medicines; some must not be used with febuxostat

Keep in the original, tightly closed container at room temperature, protected from light, heat and moisture (not in the bathroom), and out of the reach of children.

Heart risk: people taking febuxostat, particularly those with existing heart disease, may have a higher risk of heart-related death than people taking other gout medicines. Tell your doctor about any heart or circulation problems before you start, and seek urgent help for chest pain or stroke symptoms.
