Acetamide Tablets 250mg Tablets

Acetazolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It is used to:

• lower pressure inside the eye in glaucoma
• reduce how bad altitude sickness is and how long it lasts
• help reduce fluid retention (oedema), alongside other medicines
• help control certain types of epileptic seizures

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. Do not take more or less often than prescribed.

• If you have extended-release capsules, do not crush or chew them.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless your next dose is nearly due; then skip it. Never take two doses together.
• Ask your pharmacist whether to take it with food if it upsets your stomach.

Common side effects include:

• upset stomach or being sick
• loss of appetite

Contact your doctor straight away if you have:

• numbness or tingling, unusual sleepiness, confusion or headache
• a lot more thirst or passing urine than usual
• fever, sore throat, or unusual bleeding or bruising
• a rash, or yellow skin or eyes
• blood in your urine, or pain when passing urine
• seizures

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• are allergic to sulfa (sulphonamide) medicines, water tablets (diuretics) or acetazolamide
• have heart, liver or kidney disease, or diabetes
• are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding
• take aspirin, digoxin, lithium, ciclosporin, phenobarbital, primidone, diflunisal, amphetamines, diuretics, medicines for depression or heart rhythm, or vitamins
• are having surgery or dental treatment

Keep in the original, tightly closed container at room temperature, away from heat and moisture (not in the bathroom), and out of the reach of children.

Drowsiness: it may make you sleepy. Do not drive or use machinery until you know how it affects you. Alcohol can make drowsiness worse.

Sunlight: your skin may burn more easily. Limit sun exposure and use protective clothing and sunscreen.

Pregnancy: call your doctor straight away if you become pregnant while taking it.
