Warfin 1mg Tablets

Warfarin sodium is an anticoagulant, often called a blood thinner. It makes your blood take longer to clot. It is used to:

• prevent and treat harmful blood clots
• lower the risk of complications from certain irregular heartbeats
• prevent clots in people with replacement heart valves, or after a heart attack or stroke

Take it exactly as your doctor tells you, once a day at the same time.

• It can be taken with or without food.
• You will need regular blood tests (INR) to set your dose. Keep every appointment.
• Do not stop or change your dose without your doctor's advice.
• If you miss a dose, take it the same day if you remember. Do not take a double dose the next day; tell your doctor.
• Keep the amount of vitamin K in your diet steady (for example, leafy green vegetables).

Common side effects include:

• wind, bloating or stomach pain
• changes in taste
• hair loss or feeling cold

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• bleeding that will not stop, nosebleeds or bleeding gums
• red, pink or dark brown urine, or red or black stools
• coughing or vomiting blood, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
• severe headache, dizziness or weakness, or a fall or bang to the head
• painful, purple or dark toes or skin
• yellow skin or eyes, or chest pain

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• are pregnant or could become pregnant: warfarin can harm an unborn baby, so use reliable contraception
• are breastfeeding
• are over 65, have high blood pressure, kidney or liver disease, anaemia, cancer or a past stroke
• are having surgery or dental treatment
• take aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, omeprazole or herbal products such as garlic, ginkgo, ginseng or St John's wort

Keep it in its original, tightly closed container at room temperature, away from light, heat and moisture (not in the bathroom), and out of the reach of children.

Bleeding: warfarin can cause serious or even fatal bleeding. Avoid activities with a high risk of injury.

Interactions: many medicines and foods change its effect. Always check before starting anything new.

Alcohol: ask your doctor how much is safe.

Carry a card saying you take warfarin.
