Uses
Cephradine, also spelled cefradine, is a cephalosporin antibiotic that kills a wide range of bacteria.
It is used for infections of the throat, sinuses, ears and chest, urine infections such as cystitis, and skin and soft tissue infections such as boils, abscesses and cellulitis. It is also sometimes used to help prevent infection around surgery. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.
How to use
Take cephradine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.
- It can be taken with or without food.
- Keep using it for the full course, even if you feel better after a few days. Stopping early can let the infection come back and helps germs become resistant.
- For some throat infections your doctor may ask you to take it for a longer time to protect against complications.
- If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due. Do not take two doses together.
Side effects
Side effects are usually mild and include:
- Feeling sick, being sick, diarrhoea or stomach pain
- Heartburn or a sore tongue
- Headache or dizziness
- Vaginal thrush or itching
Get medical help straight away if you have:
- Signs of a serious allergic reaction: rash or hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, wheezing, or trouble breathing or swallowing
- A severe rash with blistering or peeling skin
- Severe or bloody diarrhoea
- Yellow skin or eyes
- Chest tightness, joint pain or swelling
Precautions
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:
- Are allergic to any cephalosporin antibiotic (you must not take it)
- Have had an allergic reaction to penicillin, as some people react to both
- Have porphyria (you must not take it)
- Have kidney problems, as you may need a lower dose
- Have a history of allergies, asthma, hay fever or hives
- Take diuretics such as furosemide, or probenecid
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Storage
Store capsules below 25°C and keep them out of the sight and reach of children.
Warnings
Cephradine can make some people dizzy, so do not drive or use machines if affected. It can give false results in some urine sugar tests, so tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have diabetes and test your urine. Contact a doctor if you get severe or bloody diarrhoea.
