Ceftriaxone is a cephalosporin antibiotic that kills bacteria. Doctors use it to treat a range of bacterial infections and to help prevent infection before some operations.

It is sometimes also used to prevent infection in other situations, such as in close contacts of someone with meningitis. It does not work for colds, flu or other viral infections.

Ceftriaxone is given into a vein (as an injection or drip) or into a muscle, usually by a doctor or nurse. Some people get it at a clinic or at home. Your doctor decides how many doses you need.

• Keep using it for the full course, even if you feel better after a few days. Stopping early can let the infection come back and helps germs become resistant.
• Tell your doctor if you do not start to feel better in the first few days.
• If a dose is missed, give it when you remember unless the next one is almost due. Never give two doses together.
• Keep all doctor and blood test appointments.

Common side effects include:

• Pain, hardness or warmth where the injection was given
• Diarrhoea
• Rash
• Changes in blood test results

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• Signs of a serious allergic reaction: rash or hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, wheezing, or trouble breathing or swallowing
• Blistering, peeling or shedding skin
• Watery or bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps or fever, during treatment or up to two months or more after it ends
• Yellow skin or eyes, or dark urine
• Severe pain in the side or back, pain when passing urine or passing much less urine
• Strong stomach pain, nausea or vomiting
• Fits, confusion or unusual movements

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you:

• Have ever had a serious allergic reaction to penicillin or a similar antibiotic
• Have gallstones, kidney stones, kidney or liver problems
• Have had colitis or diarrhoea after antibiotics
• Have a blood problem such as haemolytic anaemia
• Are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding
• Have recently had, or are about to have, any medicine containing calcium given into a vein

It must not be given to premature babies or to some newborn babies, especially those needing calcium drips.

The powder is stored below 30°C in its carton to protect it from light. Once mixed it should be used quickly. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Ceftriaxone must not be mixed with, or given at the same time as, calcium-containing injections or drips. It can make some people dizzy, so do not drive if affected. It can change results of some urine sugar tests and blood tests, so tell the person doing the test that you are using it.
