Tobradex 0.3%/0.1% Drops

Tobramycin with dexamethasone is used for inflamed eyes that need a steroid when there is also a bacterial infection, or a risk of one.

• Tobramycin is an antibiotic that kills the bacteria causing eye infections.
• Dexamethasone is a steroid that reduces redness, swelling, irritation and burning.

It may be used for inflammation of the front of the eye, some types of uveitis, and eye injuries from chemicals, heat, radiation or foreign bodies.

Use it exactly as your doctor tells you, and only in the eyes.

• Shake the suspension well before each use.
• Wash your hands before and after. Do not let the tip touch your eye or anything else.
• Pull down the lower lid, put in the drop or a thin strip of ointment, then close your eye for 1 to 2 minutes.
• Wait at least 5 minutes between different eye medicines.
• Do not wear contact lenses during treatment.
• Do not stop early; your doctor may reduce how often you use it as you improve.
• If you miss a dose, use it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due. Do not double up.

Common side effects include:

• stinging, burning, itching or watering of the eye
• redness or swelling of the eyelid or eye
• blurred vision for a short time, especially with the ointment

Contact your doctor straight away if you have:

• eye pain, or changes in vision such as blurring or halos around lights
• signs of a new or worsening eye infection
• a drooping eyelid
• a rash, swelling or other signs of an allergic reaction

Do not use it if you have a viral eye infection (such as herpes, chickenpox or vaccinia), a fungal or mycobacterial (TB) eye infection, or an allergy to any ingredient.

Check with your doctor first if you:

• are allergic to tobramycin or similar antibiotics (aminoglycosides)
• have glaucoma, cataracts or thinning of the eye surface
• have diabetes
• are pregnant or breastfeeding

It is not established for children under 2.

Keep tightly closed in the original container at room temperature (suspension stored upright), away from heat and moisture, and out of the reach of children.

Eye pressure and cataracts: long-term steroid use can raise eye pressure (leading to glaucoma and nerve damage) and cause cataracts. Your doctor should check your eye pressure, especially if used for 10 days or longer. Do not use it for longer than prescribed.

Hidden infection: steroids can hide or worsen some infections, including fungal ones.

Driving: do not drive until your vision is clear.

Pregnancy: use only if your doctor feels the benefit outweighs the risk.
