Thiocolchicoside is a muscle relaxant. It is used as an add-on treatment for short-term relief of painful muscle contractions (spasms) caused by sudden (acute) problems of the spine, such as acute back pain.

It is for adults and young people aged 16 and over. European regulators restricted its use in 2013: it should not be used for long-term conditions.

Take thiocolchicoside exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• Do not take more than prescribed, and never take it for more than 7 days in a row by mouth.
• It is not for long-term use. If you have been given it for a long time, ask your doctor to review your treatment.
• If you forget a dose, do not take a double dose to make up for it.
• If you take too much by accident, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
• A repeat prescription should be checked with the doctor who prescribed it.

Like all medicines, thiocolchicoside can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any side effect that worries you.

Stop taking it and get medical help straight away if you have:

• yellow skin or eyes, or dark pee (possible liver injury)
• a fit (seizure)
• signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat, rash or difficulty breathing

Do not take thiocolchicoside if you:

• are allergic to thiocolchicoside or any ingredient
• are pregnant, might be pregnant or are breastfeeding
• are a woman who could become pregnant and are not using contraception
• are under 16

Tell your doctor before taking it if you:

• have epilepsy or have had fits
• have liver problems
• take other medicines, especially painkillers such as paracetamol or anti-inflammatories

Store as the pack directs and keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Pregnancy and contraception: it may harm an unborn baby. Do not take it if you are pregnant, and use effective contraception if you could become pregnant. Your doctor will explain this.

Breastfeeding: do not take it, as it passes into breast milk.

Why the limits matter: at high doses, a substance the body makes from thiocolchicoside can damage chromosomes in cells. This could harm an unborn baby, reduce male fertility and, in theory, raise cancer risk. Stick to the dose and time limits.
