Rabeprazole sodium lowers the amount of acid your stomach makes. It belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

It is used to:

• treat heartburn and acid reflux (GERD) and help the food pipe heal
• stop reflux damage from coming back
• treat stomach and duodenal ulcers
• get rid of H. pylori bacteria, together with antibiotics
• treat conditions where the stomach makes too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Take rabeprazole exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• Swallow the tablets whole with water. Do not split, chew or crush them, as they are made to release the medicine in the gut.
• For some conditions, such as ulcers, your doctor may ask you to take it after a meal.
• Keep taking it for as long as you are told, even if you feel well.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember, unless your next dose is nearly due. Never take two doses together.
• Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or get worse.

Common side effects include:

• headache
• feeling or being sick
• diarrhoea, constipation or wind
• sore throat

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• blistering, peeling or bleeding skin, or sores in the mouth
• swelling of the face or throat, a rash, or trouble breathing
• severe watery diarrhoea or stomach pain that will not go away
• an irregular heartbeat, muscle spasms, fits or severe dizziness
• new joint pain or a rash on sun-exposed skin

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• are allergic to rabeprazole or another PPI
• have liver disease or osteoporosis
• have low levels of magnesium, calcium, potassium or vitamin B12
• have an autoimmune disease such as lupus
• take other medicines, including iron supplements
• are pregnant, planning a baby or breastfeeding
• are 70 or older

Keep it in the original, tightly closed container at room temperature, away from heat and moisture (not in the bathroom), and out of the reach of children. Do not flush unused medicine; ask your pharmacist how to dispose of it.

Using a PPI for a long time, especially at high doses or for a year or more, may raise the risk of broken bones in the hip, wrist or spine, and of small growths in the stomach. Your doctor should use it for the shortest time that works for you.
