Purpal Injection 40mg Injection

Esomeprazole injection is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that lowers the amount of acid your stomach makes. It is used for a short time when treatment by mouth is not possible, for example to:

• treat acid reflux (GORD), where stomach acid comes up into the food pipe and causes pain and heartburn
• treat or prevent stomach ulcers caused by anti-inflammatory painkillers (NSAIDs)
• help stop bleeding from a stomach or duodenal ulcer coming back after an endoscopy

It can be used in adults and in children aged 1 to 18 for reflux.

This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse in hospital or a clinic.

• It is given as an injection or a drip (infusion) into a vein.
• Your doctor decides how much you need and for how long. It is only used for a short time, while you cannot take medicine by mouth.
• Tell the nurse if you notice pain or swelling where the needle goes in.
• If you think you have been given too much, tell your doctor straight away.

Common side effects include:

• headache
• diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain or wind
• feeling or being sick
• a reaction where the injection was given

Tell a doctor or nurse straight away if you have:

• sudden wheezing, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat or body, rash, fainting or difficulty swallowing
• a severe rash, blistering or peeling skin, sometimes with fever or sores in the mouth, eyes or genitals
• yellow skin or eyes, dark urine and tiredness
• fever with a severe sore throat or feeling very unwell

Tell your doctor or nurse before you are given it if you:

• are allergic to esomeprazole or other PPIs such as omeprazole, lansoprazole or pantoprazole
• take nelfinavir (it must not be given with this), atazanavir, clopidogrel, warfarin, phenytoin, methotrexate, tacrolimus, some antifungals or antidepressants, or St John's wort
• have severe liver or kidney problems
• have ever had a skin reaction to a similar acid-reducing medicine
• are due a Chromogranin A blood test
• are pregnant, think you may be, or are breastfeeding

Hospital staff store, prepare and dispose of this medicine.

Hidden symptoms: it can mask signs of other illness. Tell your doctor straight away if you lose weight without trying, have trouble swallowing, vomit food or blood, or pass black stools.

Skin: serious skin rashes can occur, even after several weeks. Report any new rash, especially on sun-exposed skin.

Breastfeeding: it should not be given while breastfeeding.

Driving: if you feel dizzy or have blurred vision, do not drive or use machines.
