Prevent Tablet 500mg Tablets

Tinidazole is a nitroimidazole antimicrobial. It kills the germs (certain parasites and bacteria) that cause infection.

It is used to treat:

• trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection
• bacterial vaginosis, an overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the vagina
• giardiasis, a gut infection causing diarrhoea, wind and cramps
• amoebiasis, a gut infection that can spread to the liver

Take tinidazole exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. Some infections need only one dose; others need a short course.

• Take it with food, which helps reduce stomach upset.
• Shake the liquid well before each dose.
• Take it at about the same time each day if you need more than one dose.
• Finish the full course even if you feel better.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due. Never take a double dose.

Common side effects include:

• a sharp, metallic taste in the mouth
• feeling or being sick, loss of appetite
• constipation, stomach pain or cramps
• headache, tiredness, weakness or dizziness
• thick white vaginal discharge (thrush)

Call your doctor straight away if you have:

• fits (seizures)
• numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
• rash, hives, hoarseness, trouble swallowing or breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• are allergic to tinidazole, metronidazole or any other medicine
• have Cockayne syndrome (a rare inherited condition)
• have kidney failure treated with dialysis
• have had seizures, or nerve, blood or liver disease
• take warfarin, lithium, or have taken disulfiram in the last 2 weeks
• take any other medicines, vitamins or herbal products

Ask your doctor before having grapefruit or grapefruit juice.

Keep in the original container, tightly closed, at room temperature, away from heat, moisture and light, and out of the reach of children. Throw away any liquid left after 7 days.

Alcohol: do not drink alcohol, or use products containing alcohol or propylene glycol, during treatment and for 3 days afterwards. It can cause stomach cramps, sickness, vomiting, headache and flushing.

Pregnancy: tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

Breastfeeding: do not breastfeed during treatment and for 3 days after the last dose.

Fertility: it may reduce fertility in men.

Cancer risk in animals: a similar medicine caused cancer in laboratory animals. Ask your doctor about the risks and benefits.
