Uses
Paracetamol is a painkiller (analgesic) that also lowers a high temperature (antipyretic).
The infusion is used for a short time to treat:
- moderate pain, especially after surgery
- fever
It is used when a medicine needs to be given into a vein, for example when you cannot take tablets.
How to use
A doctor or nurse gives paracetamol as a drip (infusion) into a vein over about 15 minutes. The dose depends on your weight and health.
- Doses are spaced at least 4 hours apart, and longer if you have severe kidney problems.
- You will be moved to paracetamol by mouth as soon as possible.
- Tell staff about any other medicines containing paracetamol, so you do not get too much.
Side effects
Side effects are rare. They can include:
- feeling unwell
- low blood pressure
- redness, flushing, itching or a fast heartbeat
- pain or burning at the injection site
- changes in liver blood tests
Get medical help straight away if…
- you get a severe skin rash or signs of an allergic reaction
- you have deep, fast breathing, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting (possible metabolic acidosis)
- you notice unusual bleeding from the nose or gums
Precautions
You should not have it if you are allergic to paracetamol or propacetamol, or have severe liver disease.
Tell your doctor if you:
- have liver or kidney problems
- drink a lot of alcohol
- are malnourished or dehydrated
- have a severe infection (sepsis)
- take flucloxacillin, probenecid or a blood thinner taken by mouth
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
- have diabetes or are on a low-salt diet – the infusion contains glucose and sodium
Storage
Store below 25°C in the protective overwrap. Each bag is for single use and is used straight after opening. Hospital staff will store it.
Warnings
Too much paracetamol can cause serious liver damage that may not show symptoms at first. Tell staff straight away if you think you have had too much, even if you feel well.
