Ossein mineral complex (also called ossein-hydroxyapatite complex) is made from bone. It contains the bone minerals calcium and phosphorus (as hydroxyapatite) together with collagen and other bone proteins. Vitamin D helps the body absorb and use calcium.

It may be used:

• to help prevent loss of bone mass
• as an add-on to the main treatment for osteoporosis
• to prevent or treat a lack of calcium

Take it as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.

• Take it with some liquid.
• Leave at least 2 hours between this medicine and some others, such as tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, iron, zinc, bisphosphonates and thyroid hormones.
• Foods rich in oxalate (such as spinach and rhubarb) or phytate (whole grains) can reduce absorption – wait about 2 hours after these foods.
• If you miss a dose, do not take a double dose.

Possible side effects include:

• stomach pain, constipation, feeling or being sick
• itching or skin rash

Get medical help straight away if you have signs of too much calcium:

• strong thirst and passing a lot of urine
• feeling sick, vomiting, weakness or confusion
• an irregular heartbeat, bone pain or signs of kidney stones

Do not take it, or check with your doctor first, if you:

• have high calcium levels in your blood or urine, or calcium kidney stones
• have severe kidney problems or are on dialysis
• take thiazide water tablets or heart medicines such as digoxin
• take other vitamin D or calcium supplements, or antacids
• are pregnant or breastfeeding

It is not for children under 6 years.

Keep out of the sight and reach of children. No special storage conditions are needed; do not use after the expiry date.

Long-term use, high doses, or kidney problems increase the chance of high calcium levels. Your doctor may check calcium and phosphorus in your blood and urine, especially if you also take vitamin D.
