Uses
Insulin aspart is a short-acting, man-made form of human insulin. It helps move sugar from your blood into your body's tissues and stops the liver releasing too much sugar.
It is used to control blood sugar in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, usually together with a longer-acting insulin. Good control helps lower the risk of damage to the heart, kidneys, nerves and eyes. It controls diabetes but does not cure it.
How to use
Inject it exactly as your doctor, nurse or pharmacist shows you, usually just before or soon after a meal, depending on your product.
- Inject under the skin of the tummy, thighs, upper arms or buttocks. Change the spot each time, and avoid lumpy, scarred or tender skin.
- Check the label every time so you use the right insulin, and check how it looks before use.
- Never share pens, cartridges or needles, even if the needle is changed. Use a new needle each time.
- Never use it when your blood sugar is low.
- If you miss a dose, follow the plan your doctor gave you. Never inject a double dose.
- Do not stop, switch brands or change your dose without talking to your doctor.
Side effects
Common side effects include:
- redness, swelling or itching where you inject
- thickened skin, lumps or dents at injection sites
- weight gain
Get medical help straight away if you have:
- signs of low blood sugar, such as sweating, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, confusion, blurred vision or feeling very sleepy
- a rash all over, wheezing, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, tongue or throat
- muscle cramps, weakness or an irregular heartbeat
- rapid weight gain or swelling of the hands, feet, ankles or legs
Precautions
Tell your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you:
- have heart failure, or heart, kidney or liver disease
- have eye or nerve problems
- take any other medicines or supplements, including aspirin
- are planning surgery, including dental work
Illness, stress, and changes in your meals, exercise or activity can all change how much insulin you need. Keep regular mealtimes.
Storage
Keep it in the original container. Store unopened and in-use insulin in the fridge, or at room temperature away from heat and direct sunlight for the time stated in the leaflet. Never freeze it, and throw it away if it has been exposed to extreme heat or cold. Keep out of the reach of children.
Warnings
Low blood sugar: learn the warning signs and always carry a sugary snack or glucose tablets.
Driving: low blood sugar can affect your ability to drive or use machines.
Alcohol: alcohol can affect your blood sugar. Ask your doctor about drinking safely.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.
