Nebra Eye Ointment 3mg Ointment

Tobramycin is an antibiotic from the aminoglycoside group. It works by killing the bacteria that cause infection.

• Eye drops and eye ointment treat bacterial infections of the eye.
• Injection (into a vein or muscle) treats certain serious bacterial infections, usually in hospital.

Antibiotics do not work for colds, flu or other viral infections.

Use tobramycin exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, and finish the course even if you feel better.

• Eye drops: wash your hands, tilt your head back, pull down the lower lid and let one drop fall into the pocket. Close the eye for 2 to 3 minutes and press gently on the inner corner. Wait at least 5 minutes between drops.
• Eye ointment: place a small strip inside the lower lid, then close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes.
• Do not let the tip touch your eye or anything else.
• If you miss a dose, use it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due. Do not double up.
• Injection: given by a healthcare professional. Drink plenty of fluids during treatment.

Tell your doctor if the infection has not cleared after the course.

Eye products may cause watery, itchy, stinging, burning or swollen eyes, and the ointment can blur vision for a short time.

The injection may cause feeling sick, diarrhoea, headache, fever, tiredness or pain where it is given.

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing
• blistering or peeling skin, or sores in the mouth, eyes or genitals
• severe watery or bloody diarrhoea, even weeks after treatment
• (injection) peeing less, swelling of the legs or face, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, dizziness, tingling or muscle twitching

Tell your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you:

• are allergic to tobramycin or other antibiotics
• wear soft contact lenses (do not wear lenses while you have an eye infection)
• take any other medicines, vitamins or supplements

For the injection, also tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, hearing loss, dizziness or ringing in the ears, nerve problems, myasthenia gravis, Parkinson's disease or cystic fibrosis. You will need blood and hearing tests during treatment.

Keep eye drops and ointment in their container, tightly closed, at room temperature away from heat and moisture, and out of the reach of children. Store the injection as your healthcare provider tells you.

Injection risks: it can cause serious kidney damage and hearing loss, which may be permanent. The risk is higher in older or dehydrated people and with some other medicines.

Pregnancy: the injection may harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, whichever form you use.

Driving: do not drive or use machines if the eye ointment blurs your vision.
