Uses
Indapamide and amlodipine together lower high blood pressure. This tablet is meant for adults who already take both medicines at the same strengths, so they can switch to a single daily tablet. It is not used to start treatment.
- Indapamide is a diuretic (water tablet). It helps the kidneys remove extra salt and water.
- Amlodipine is a calcium-channel blocker. It relaxes and widens blood vessels.
Keeping blood pressure down lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke.
How to use
Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, usually once a day.
- Take it in the morning, swallowed whole with water. Do not chew or crush it, as it releases the medicine slowly.
- Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, which can increase side effects of amlodipine.
- If you miss a dose, follow the advice on your leaflet or ask your pharmacist. Never take two doses together.
- Treatment is usually long term. Do not stop without talking to your doctor.
- If vomiting, diarrhoea or fever leave you dehydrated, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Side effects
Common side effects include:
- swelling of the ankles or feet
- headache, dizziness (especially when standing up) or sleepiness
- flushing, or a noticeable fast heartbeat
- feeling sick, tummy pain, constipation or diarrhoea
- an itchy or bumpy rash, tiredness, passing more urine at first
Get medical help straight away if you have:
- swelling of the lips, face, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing
- sudden severe tummy pain (possible pancreatitis)
- blistering skin with flu-like symptoms
- muscle cramps or weakness, constipation and an uneven heartbeat (possible low potassium)
- chest pain
Precautions
Do not take it if you have severe kidney or liver disease, low potassium, very low blood pressure or shock, a severe narrowing of the heart valve, unstable heart failure after a heart attack, or an allergy to sulfonamide medicines.
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:
- have diabetes, gout, heart failure or a heart rhythm problem
- have low sodium or high calcium in your blood
- take lithium, NSAID painkillers such as ibuprofen, calcium supplements, certain antidepressants, heart rhythm medicines or other blood pressure medicines
- are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding
Storage
Store as the pack directs and keep out of the sight and reach of children. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.
Warnings
Blood tests: your doctor may check your potassium and other blood salts from time to time.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: neither medicine is usually recommended. Tell your doctor if you are, or become, pregnant or are breastfeeding.
Alcohol and driving: alcohol can make blood pressure drop too far. Do not drive or use machines if you feel dizzy or sleepy.
Children: not for use in children.
