Mixel 100mg Suspension

Cefixime is an antibiotic from the cephalosporin group. It works by killing bacteria.

It is used to treat certain bacterial infections. Doctors may also use it for gonorrhoea (sometimes as a single dose), pneumonia, sinus infections in people allergic to penicillin, and gut infections such as shigella, salmonella and typhoid fever.

Cefixime does not work against colds, flu or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed makes resistant infections more likely later.

Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, usually once or twice a day.

• You can take it with or without food.
• Shake the liquid well before each dose. Chew chewable tablets fully before swallowing.
• Finish the whole course, even if you feel better. Stopping early can leave the infection untreated.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next one is nearly due. Never take two doses together.
• Different cefixime products are not interchangeable; do not switch without advice.
• Tell your doctor if you are not starting to feel better within a few days.

Common side effects include:

• diarrhoea, feeling or being sick
• stomach pain, wind or heartburn

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• watery or bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps or fever, even up to 2 months after finishing the course
• rash, itching, hives, wheezing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing
• a sore throat, fever or chills that come back

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:

• have had an allergic reaction to cefixime, another cephalosporin, penicillin or any other medicine
• have bowel problems, especially colitis
• have kidney or liver disease
• have phenylketonuria (some chewable tablets contain aspartame)
• take any other medicines or supplements

Store tablets and capsules at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. The liquid can be kept at room temperature or in the fridge and should be thrown away 14 days after it is made up. Keep out of the reach of children.

Contraception: cefixime may make hormonal contraception less effective, so use an extra method during treatment.

Diabetes: it can affect some urine sugar tests; ask your pharmacist which test to use.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.
