Methachlor Eye Ointment 5/1mg Ointment

Chloramphenicol and dexamethasone eye drops combine two medicines:

• Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic that treats or prevents bacterial infection.
• Dexamethasone is a steroid that reduces swelling, redness and irritation.

They are used for inflammation of the eye that is not caused by a virus, such as some types of conjunctivitis, keratitis (inflamed cornea), iritis, scleritis and episcleritis, and to manage the eye after cataract, glaucoma or squint surgery.

Use the drops exactly as your doctor tells you, and only for as long as they say.

• Wash your hands, gently pull down the lower eyelid and place the drop inside it.
• Do not let the dropper touch your eye or anything else.
• Close your eye and press gently on the inner corner for about 3 minutes.
• Close the bottle straight after use.
• Do not wear contact lenses during treatment.
• If you miss a dose, do not use a double dose. Do not stop without asking your doctor.

Possible side effects include:

• burning, stinging or itching of the eye
• rash or skin irritation around the eye
• with long or frequent use: raised eye pressure or cataract

Stop using the drops and get medical help straight away if you have:

• swelling of the face, lips, mouth or throat, or difficulty breathing or swallowing
• rash or itching that spreads
• pale skin, unusual tiredness, fever, frequent infections or easy bruising (rare blood problems)

Do not use these drops, and speak to your doctor, if you:

• have a viral (such as herpes) or fungal eye infection
• have a damaged or ulcerated cornea
• have glaucoma
• have a blood disorder, liver problems, or a family history of bone marrow problems

They must not be used in newborn babies and need care in children under 2.

Store in a fridge (2–8°C), out of the reach of children, and throw away 30 days after opening.

Long-term use: avoid repeated courses unless your eye doctor advises them. Your eye pressure may need checking.

Vision: contact your doctor if your vision becomes blurred or changes. The drops may blur vision briefly, so do not drive until it is clear.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: ask your doctor or pharmacist before use.

Getting worse: see your doctor if your eye is worse or not better.
