Uses
Aspirin has two main uses, depending on the dose.
- Low-dose aspirin is taken every day to stop blood platelets clumping together. This helps prevent blood clots, heart attacks and strokes in people at risk. Doctors may also advise it in pregnancy to help prevent pre-eclampsia.
- Higher-dose aspirin is taken only when needed to ease pain, such as headache or toothache, and to bring down a fever.
Aspirin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Only take low-dose aspirin every day if a doctor has advised it.
How to use
Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you, or as the pack says.
- Take it with or just after food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow standard tablets whole with water.
- Dissolve dispersible tablets in a glass of water before drinking.
- For pain, leave at least 4 hours between doses and do not take more than the pack allows in 24 hours.
- Low-dose aspirin for the heart is usually taken long term. Do not stop it unless your doctor tells you to.
- If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless your next dose is nearly due. Never take two doses together.
- Throw away tablets that smell strongly of vinegar.
Side effects
Common side effects include:
- indigestion or stomach ache
- bleeding more easily than usual, such as nosebleeds or bruising
Get medical help straight away if you have:
- vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
- black, tarry or bloody stools, or severe tummy pain
- wheezing or difficulty breathing
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or a severe rash
- ringing in the ears or hearing loss
Precautions
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:
- have had an allergic reaction to aspirin, ibuprofen or another NSAID
- have or have had a stomach ulcer or bleeding in the stomach
- have asthma, heart failure, liver or kidney problems, gout or a bleeding disorder
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
- drink 3 or more alcoholic drinks a day
- take blood thinners (such as warfarin or rivaroxaban), steroids, some antidepressants, some blood pressure medicines, methotrexate or other NSAIDs
- are due to have surgery or dental treatment
Storage
Keep in the original container, tightly closed, at room temperature away from heat and moisture (not in the bathroom), and out of the reach of children.
Warnings
Children: do not give aspirin to anyone aged 15 or under unless a doctor prescribes it, because of the risk of Reye's syndrome, a rare but serious illness.
Pregnancy: pain-relief doses are not recommended at any stage of pregnancy; paracetamol is usually preferred. Low-dose aspirin should only be used in pregnancy if your doctor advises it.
Alcohol: limit alcohol, as it increases the risk of stomach bleeding.
Stop and see a doctor if pain lasts more than 10 days or fever more than 3 days.
