Menotropin, also called menotrophin, is a highly purified mix of fertility hormones (FSH and LH activity) taken from urine. It is used under specialist care:

• in women who do not ovulate, including some with polycystic ovaries, when clomifene has not worked
• to help several eggs develop in women having IVF or other assisted conception
• in men, to treat a low sperm count

Use it exactly as your fertility doctor or nurse tells you. Doses and timing depend on your treatment plan and on your response.

• It is a powder that is mixed with the liquid provided, then injected under the skin or into a muscle.
• Your first injection should be supervised by a doctor or nurse, who can teach you how to inject safely.
• Swirl the vial gently to mix. Do not shake it. Use the solution straight away, and do not use it if it is cloudy or has particles.
• You will have ultrasound scans and sometimes blood tests to check how your ovaries respond.
• If you miss a dose, do not double up. Contact your clinic.

Common side effects include:

• tummy pain or swelling, pelvic pain
• headache, feeling sick
• redness, bruising, swelling or itching where you inject

Get medical help straight away if you have:

• tummy pain or swelling, sickness, diarrhoea, fast weight gain, passing less urine or trouble breathing (signs of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, which can start days after the last injection)
• pain, swelling or redness in a leg, or chest pain (possible blood clot)
• sudden severe pelvic pain
• rash, swelling of the face, lips or throat, or trouble breathing

It must not be used if you:

• have a tumour of the pituitary gland or hypothalamus
• have a tumour of the womb, ovary or breast, or ovarian cysts not caused by polycystic ovaries
• have unexplained vaginal bleeding, early menopause, fibroids or a womb problem that makes pregnancy impossible
• are pregnant or breastfeeding
• are a man with testicular or prostate cancer

Tell your doctor if you or your family have had blood clots, if you are very overweight, or if you have had tubal disease.

Do not store above 25°C and do not freeze. Keep in the original pack to protect from light, and use straight after mixing. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Multiple pregnancy: treatment increases the chance of twins or more.

Other risks: ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage are more likely during fertility treatment, so you will be closely monitored.

It is not for use in children.
