Uses
Azithromycin dihydrate is an antibiotic from the macrolide group. It stops bacteria from growing, which clears the infection. ('Compacted' simply describes how the powder is processed for capsules or tablets.)
It may be prescribed for:
- chest infections, including pneumonia
- ear, sinus and throat infections
- some sexually transmitted infections
- Lyme disease
It will not help colds, flu or other viral infections.
How to use
Take it exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.
- Take capsules or tablets at least 1 hour before food or 2 hours after eating, swallowed whole with water.
- Leave a gap of at least 1 hour before, or 2 hours after, any antacid (indigestion remedy).
- Keep taking it until the course is finished, even if you feel better, so the infection does not return.
- If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next one is nearly due. Never take two doses together.
- See your doctor if you do not feel better after 3 days, or feel worse at any point.
Side effects
Common side effects include:
- feeling or being sick, diarrhoea
- loss of appetite
- headache
- dizziness or tiredness
- changes in taste
Get medical help straight away if you have:
- a racing, pounding or irregular heartbeat, or chest pain
- yellowing of the skin or eyes, pale poo or dark pee
- diarrhoea that is watery or bloody, even weeks after the course ends
- ringing in the ears, hearing loss or a spinning feeling
- swelling of the face, lips or throat, trouble breathing, or a severe rash (emergency)
Precautions
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you:
- have had an allergic reaction to azithromycin or any other antibiotic
- have liver or kidney problems
- have a heart rhythm problem, or a family history of one
- have myasthenia gravis
- take blood thinners such as warfarin, digoxin, colchicine, ciclosporin, ergotamine, or medicines that affect heart rhythm
Storage
Keep at room temperature, away from heat and moisture, in the original pack and out of the reach of children.
Warnings
Heart rhythm: rarely, azithromycin can affect the heartbeat. Get urgent help for palpitations or fainting.
Driving and alcohol: do not drive or use machines if you feel dizzy. Alcohol is usually fine in moderation.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: tell your doctor; it may be used if the benefits outweigh the risks.
Contraception: it does not stop the pill working, but severe vomiting or diarrhoea can.
